All About Stone–Steps
Consider using stone as much as possible for your outdoor building, landscape and gardening projects, it’s easier than you think, and lends to for a more subtle and timeless appearance. Surprisingly, these heavy pieces were moved and easily installed without heavy equipment by myself using only a handful of iron pipes for rollers, a couple of pry bars for levers and some planks. In picture #7 the stone steps were hauled by hand in the winter on frozen ground and ice, making it easier move on the hardened surface.
Moving these pieces with only hand tools and simple mechanics seem primitive but heavy equipment would have had limited access seriously disturbing the existing landscape. The work provided for exhilarating exercise and nice sense of accomplishment.
Allowing the shrubs and ground cover grow over the edges in time softens the stone subtly.
